Mike

Day 32 – On the Road

* * *

“Fuck, I hope that wasn’t BT,” he said as he wiped his face and stood smiling at his pole dancing joke and at the remembrance of the previous evening. There was a heavy knocking on the door.

“Yo, Talbot. You awake? We’re getting ready to leave.”

Mike walked over to the door, opened it, and stretched.

“You’re an asshole.” BT looked away quickly.

“Be right back.” Mike turned and headed to the bathroom.

“Jesus, Talbot, at least shut the door. Already bad enough I’ve got the front of you burned into my cortex; now I have to deal with the backside, as well?”

They left the motel with no fanfare. Mike looked for the professor but the man didn’t have the balls even to flip them off. Mike wasn’t sure what he expected from Tracy, but that she was actively ignoring him; it hardly seemed like the appropriate response, unless she was ashamed or embarrassed.

“You haven’t said anything for over an hour, and, while I appreciate the quiet, this is very unlike you,” BT said. “Everything all right?”

“Besides the country falling into enemy hands?”

“Obviously.”

“Then, yeah, everything is great.”

“We’re supposed to reach the base by tonight.”

“Uh-huh,” Mike responded.

“Mrs. Bennilli decided to sit up front today.”

“Uh-huh.”

“It looks like the US was able to procure some dragons in the fight against the invaders.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Not only that, but they have a division of laser-shooting unicorns.”

“Uh-huh.”

“They’re talking about making me a general.”

Mike paused. “That an affirmative action thing?”

“That you respond to?”

“I mean, it was just so absolutely unbelievable. I’m more inclined to believe the dragons part…but not the unicorns, no way they’d pick a side. They’d rather man wiped themselves out like we almost did to them.”

“You’ve got problems, man. So, what’s your plan once we get there? You going to ride this out with the military?”

“About a hundred miles from where they’re amassing is a cabin my folks used to bring me to as a kid. It’s outside a place called Osceola, Missouri…someone in the Talbot clan owned the place, couldn’t tell you who. The thing was out in the middle of nowhere.”

“And you’re telling me this why?” BT asked when Mike did not continue.

“If everything goes to shit, it might be a good place to lay low. Plenty of deer, might be crocodiles, too, which taste surprisingly like chicken.”

“You ate crocodile? I wouldn’t think your pedestrian tastes would run so deep.”

“I was tricked. They told me it was chicken, so I rolled with it. Even breaded and fried the pieces to make it look like nuggets, lying bastards. That was worth two months’ of therapy right there. Hence my need to see my food being prepared. I should have known. Everyone was watching me eat and smiling. How fucking psychotic is that, man? Completely lying about what someone’s putting in their mouth and getting your rocks off while doing it?”

“Come on, man, you must have bought a used car at some point. Lying and smiling is a way of life for some people.”

“I get some business guy trying to get something from me, but family?”

“I was a cop, Talbot.
